❤️🌸 Valentine’s Day Art – Patterns, Flowers and Signs of Spring

Over the Valentine’s period, the children created colourful handmade cards, combining art, maths, and nature learning.

First, the children designed heart cards while exploring important maths concepts through art. They practised repetition and patterns, arranging hearts in repeating sequences across their bunting. The children also explored size relationships, creating larger and smaller hearts, and revisited our learning about fractions by identifying halves of hearts and noticing symmetry.

The following week, the children enriched their cards by creating beautiful flower bouquets. They carefully cut, shaped, and assembled petals, leaves, and flower centres to build their own flowers.

While making the flowers, we connected our learning to nature and seasonal changes. The children learned about parts of a flower, including petals, centres, and leaves, and discussed early signs of spring, such as snowdrops and daffodils that begin to appear after winter.

This activity supported:

  • Understanding patterns and repetition

  • Comparing sizes (bigger and smaller)

  • Recognising halves and symmetry

  • Fine motor skills through cutting, shaping, and assembling

  • Creativity and artistic design

  • Understanding nature and seasonal changes

The finished cards created a beautiful Valentine’s display in our classroom, full of colour, patterns, and signs of the approaching spring. ❤️🌸
