🔬 Science Week Finale – Oobleck! 🎉

We finished Science Week with a special visit from the Senior School, who kindly introduced us to oobleck and shared their recipe so we can try it at home.

Oobleck is a non-Newtonian fluid, meaning it behaves like a solid when pressure is applied but flows like a liquid when handled gently. The children were fascinated by how it changed depending on how they touched it.

Oobleck Recipe (shared by the Senior School):
• 1 cup cornflour
• 300 ml water
• Food colouring (optional)
– 7 drops of red = red oobleck
– 2 drops of red = pink oobleck

If the mixture is too sticky, add a little more cornflour.
If it is too watery, add a little more water until the texture feels right.

The children enjoyed squeezing, punching, scooping, and slowly letting their hands sink into the mixture, observing how it instantly changed from hard to soft. Many parents told us that the children went home excited to search for cornflour and recreate the experiment themselves!

A helpful note for home:
Oobleck can get quite messy, so it is best explored outside or on a large tray. Having tissues and a bowl of water nearby for cleaning hands makes the activity much easier.

Each child had the opportunity to explore the material, making this activity a wonderful combination of science, sensory exploration, and curiosity-driven learning.

A wonderfully messy and memorable way to finish our Science Week investigations! 🌟
