🌱 Science – Growing Chia Seeds 🌿

The children explored how plants grow through a hands-on chia seed planting activity, developing both independence and collaboration along the way. Each child carefully used a spoon to add seeds, soil, and water, showing great care and attention. It was particularly lovely to observe children supporting one another, gently reminding their peers what to do and how much to use.
By growing the chia seeds in clear bags rather than pots, the children were closely observing the full growth process. This provided a valuable opportunity to see changes over time, including:
- Seeds beginning to germinate
- Tiny roots growing downwards into the soil
- Shoots growing upwards towards the light
- The first small green leaves appear
We explored how seeds can be planted in any direction, even upside down, yet the plant still grows correctly — with shoots growing upwards towards the light and roots growing downwards into the soil. This happens thanks to gravitropism (how roots respond to gravity) and phototropism (how shoots grow towards light). The children observed these changes daily, developing an understanding of how plants grow and what they need to survive.
This activity supported:
- Understanding of plant life cycles and germination
- Observation and inquiry skills
- Scientific vocabulary (roots, shoots, growth, germination)
- Responsibility and care for living things
- Collaboration and peer learning
It was wonderful to see the children so engaged in watching their plants grow and making connections between what they learned and what they could see happening in real life 🌱✨
🌱 A Special Reflection
It has truly been an honour to observe the children learn, develop, and grow — just like those chia seeds — since the beginning of the school year. Each child has made wonderful progress in their own unique way, showing curiosity, resilience, creativity, and kindness.
As I now step into a new role, I would like to warmly share that Ms Nugent will be taking over the class. I know the children will continue to thrive under her care, support, and guidance.
Thank you for your continued support throughout the year. It has been a privilege to be part of your child’s learning journey 🌿✨
