🏙️ Our Community – Small World Play 🚒🏥🐄

This week, the children learned about our community, the people who work in it, and the important jobs they do. To support this learning, the children helped create their own mini town through small-world play.
Our classroom community included:
-
🏥 a hospital
-
📮 the GPO
-
💇 a hairdresser
-
🚒 a fire station
-
🚔 a Garda station
-
🛍️ shops
-
🚦 roads and traffic lights
-
🐄 a farm
-
🐸 a pond
-
🏠 houses, buildings, and busy people
Through discussion and play, the children explored:
-
Different jobs in the community
-
Where people work
-
How people travel (cars, buses, bikes, walking)
-
Services that help keep us safe
-
What helps a community work well
Using blocks, figures, natural materials, and their imagination, the children acted out real-life situations — from firefighters responding to emergencies to farmers caring for animals.
This activity supported learning across Geography, SPHE, Oral Language, and Play-based learning, helping the children develop communication, cooperation, problem-solving, and a deeper understanding of the world around them. 🌟
